DevOps in the Netherlands — the detail

Platform Engineering Built for Netherlands Teams

Dutch companies internationalise early and outgrow their infrastructure late. The pattern repeats across the country's eight provinces and 25 cities: a product built for one market now serving six, a database that was comfortable at launch, a release process that still depends on the engineer who wrote it. Rotterdam and Amsterdam are the largest cities, with The Hague, Utrecht, Groningen, Eindhoven, Tilburg and Breda close behind, and the reliability problem reads the same in every one of them. Growth exposed the architecture; nobody was given a quarter to go back and fix it.

That repair is engineering work, not a hiring round. We act as the platform team a growing company cannot yet justify on payroll, led by Md Nahid (CKA, CKS, AWS Solutions Architect). Dutch cloud geography makes the job easier: Azure West Europe sits inside the country about 34 km from its centre, Google Cloud europe-west4 is domestic too at 189 km, and europe-west1 in Belgium and AWS eu-central-1 in Frankfurt add second homes 202 and 332 km out. The Dutch and Belgian regions answer inside 10 ms, Frankfurt in roughly 10-20 ms, so region choice turns on residency and contract wording rather than milliseconds.

The closest region to the Netherlands is Azure West Europe in Netherlands, about 38 km away — a round trip of under 10 ms before application time. We pin latency-sensitive services there and spread availability zones for resilience.

Distances are great-circle from the area centre; round-trip figures are conservative estimates from that distance, not measured SLAs.

Teams We Support Across the Netherlands

Our the Netherlands coverage follows where engineering actually happens — Rotterdam, Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and 18 more metros. Every engagement is remote-first, so a team's postcode never decides how fast it ships.

Who We Build For in the Netherlands

Logistics and freight dominate the national picture, from the Rotterdam port complex to the air cargo estate around Schiphol, and their planning systems cannot pause for a maintenance window. High-tech manufacturing and semiconductor equipment cluster in and around Eindhoven, where simulation and test data arrive faster than storage budgets grow. Agri-food and horticulture run greenhouse control, breeding and cold-chain platforms that treat a lost hour as spoiled stock. Financial services, payments and insurance concentrate in Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague under supervisory expectations that shape change control. Energy has shifted from Groningen gas to North Sea wind, bringing telemetry volumes with it. Government and international institutions in The Hague add procurement rules, and Dutch SaaS and e-commerce firms carry the sharpest growth curves of all.

Why Engineering Leaders in the Netherlands Bring Us In

Reliability under growth is unglamorous work: capacity you can predict, deploys you can undo, alerts that mean something. It is easier to buy that skill set than to recruit it against Randstad salaries.

  • Clusters that survive a traffic spike. Kubernetes cluster management covers autoscaling, upgrades, disruption budgets and the failure modes a lone in-house generalist meets for the first time at 02:00.
  • Two domestic regions, two neighbours. Azure West Europe and Google europe-west4 keep workloads on Dutch soil; Belgium and Frankfurt stand ready when a customer contract demands a separate failure domain.
  • Your whole day on Europe/Amsterdam. Currently UTC+2, so standups, change windows and incident bridges sit inside Dutch hours, while the afternoon still catches a US East Coast morning six hours behind.
  • Every change reversible. Releases ship behind a switch somebody can flip back in a minute, which is what actually lets a scale-up deploy on a Friday.
  • Engineering bought as a service. Certified people on the work itself, without a recruiter fee, a notice period or an office lease behind it.

Frequently Asked Questions — Netherlands

Our platform is already straining under six markets' worth of traffic. What would you have done by the end of a quarter?

The first fortnight is triage: what breaks, how often, and which of it costs money. Weeks three to six deliver one visible fix, usually a build and deploy path that runs end to end without a human. The rest of the quarter widens that path, puts infrastructure under version control and turns your loudest alerts into ones worth waking for.

Can our data stay inside the Netherlands?

Yes. Azure West Europe and Google Cloud europe-west4 are both Dutch regions, so production data, backups and logs can stay in country while the engineering happens remotely. We design the residency boundary explicitly, including where telemetry and third party tooling send copies, because that is usually where a residency promise quietly leaks.

Which working hours do your engineers keep for a Dutch client?

Europe/Amsterdam sets the clock, currently UTC+2 with the usual winter shift back to UTC+1. Reviews, deployments and incident calls happen inside your working day rather than at the edges of it. Because the Netherlands runs six hours ahead of US Eastern, a late afternoon release here still lands in a New York morning.

If we later build our own platform team, what do we keep?

Everything, and that is the design goal. Pipelines, Terraform, runbooks and architecture decisions live in your repositories under your accounts from the outset. There is no bespoke tooling only we understand and no licence that follows us out. Handover is a pairing period agreed with your new hires in advance, not a negotiation.

Our developers have never worked with an outside platform team. What does that look like from their desk?

Inside your tools, not ours. We join your Slack or Teams, your issue tracker and your repositories, publish a short written update on an agreed cadence, and keep decisions in files your engineers can read later. The working language is English, which Dutch engineering teams tend to use already. Nothing significant gets agreed in a call your people were not in.

What access does an outside platform team get to production?

Named accounts with least privilege, multi factor authentication and short lived credentials rather than shared logins. Access is granted per environment and revoked on a schedule, changes go through review, and every deploy leaves an immutable record. If you need break glass access for us, it is time boxed and logged loudly enough that somebody notices.
