DevOps in Switzerland — the detail

DevOps Services for Switzerland Software Teams

Swiss software rarely fails outright; it just stops moving. The shape is familiar from Zürich to Winterthur — an insurance platform with real premiums behind it, a trading system in Geneva that nobody wants to touch during market hours, a validated lab application in Basel — all still earning, all still deployed by hand into a leased data centre. Releases get scheduled around public holidays. No single failure justifies a rewrite, and no amount of care makes a quarterly cadence competitive with a rival deploying daily.

Unwinding that position is our core work, done remotely for teams anywhere from the six largest Swiss metros to the canton of Vaud. Md Nahid (CKA, CKS, AWS Solutions Architect) leads the engineering. Zurich is where the country keeps its cloud: AWS eu-central-2, Google Cloud europe-west6 and Azure Switzerland North share that metro, roughly 75 km from the geographic middle of Switzerland and under 10 ms for domestic traffic, with AWS eu-south-1 and Google europe-west8 in Milan, 214 km out, as a credible second region. Progress comes one service at a time: containerise the workload that earns, describe its network and identity in Terraform, rehearse the rollback, then choose the next candidate.

The closest region to Switzerland is AWS eu-central-2 in Zurich, Switzerland, about 75 km away — a round trip of under 10 ms before application time. We pin latency-sensitive services there and spread availability zones for resilience.

Distances are great-circle from the area centre; round-trip figures are conservative estimates from that distance, not measured SLAs.

Teams We Support Across Switzerland

Our Switzerland coverage follows where engineering actually happens — Zürich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne and 2 more metros. Every engagement is remote-first, so a team's postcode never decides how fast it ships.

Who We Build For in Switzerland

Banking and wealth management set the national tone, and their release approvals answer to a supervisor rather than to engineering preference. Insurance and reinsurance run policy and claims systems built to last decades that now have to release monthly. The pharmaceutical, biotech and specialty chemical cluster brings validated environments, long retention and qualification paperwork attached to every deployment. Commodity trading houses hold positions on systems with no acceptable window in which to stop. Precision manufacturing, machinery and watchmaking across the Jura arc are pushing machine data upstream for analysis while the plant network stays firmly separated. Public administration and the international organisations add procurement rules that reward documented, reproducible infrastructure over clever one-off scripts.

What Sets Us Apart for Switzerland Teams

Recruiting past this means bidding against banks, insurers and ETH spin-offs for a single shortlist, at Swiss salaries, inside a three-month notice culture.

  • Map it before you move it. Infrastructure as code captures the networking, identity and DNS you already depend on, so the first migration has a rollback rather than a hope.
  • Three hyperscalers, one metro. AWS eu-central-2, Google europe-west6 and Azure Switzerland North all sit in Zurich, roughly 75 km from the country centre and under 10 ms out; Milan is 214 km further.
  • Your whole working day. Change windows and incident calls run on Europe/Zurich time, currently UTC+2, while a late Swiss afternoon lands squarely inside a New York morning six hours behind.
  • An audit trail as a by-product. Reviewed merges, dual approval and a deploy log nobody can edit afterwards cover the engineering half of an FADP or ISO 27001 case; the attestation stays yours.
  • Skills without a payroll line. The CKA, CKS and AWS Solutions Architect qualifications go into the work and out again, priced as a service rather than salary, pension and notice.

What Switzerland Teams Ask Before Starting

What do we actually own when the engagement ends?

Everything. Pipelines, Terraform, manifests, dashboards and runbooks live in your repositories and your cloud accounts from the outset, under your licences. There is no wrapper product to keep paying for and no credential only we hold. An exit is a short series of walkthroughs and a written handover, not a migration project, and we run it with whoever takes over.

We are a dozen people with no platform engineer. Is that too small?

That is the common case in Switzerland, where headcount is expensive and most product teams stay lean deliberately. Small teams benefit most, because one well-built pipeline removes work from every engineer you have. We size the engagement to what a dozen people can absorb, which usually means one improvement landing each week rather than a platform rebuilt in a month.

Our certification body and the revised FADP both send us checklists. Which parts of those do you actually build?

We build the engineering half and say so plainly: access control, secrets handling, logging, backup and restore testing, and a deploy history an auditor can read without asking us for context. The framework, the gap analysis, the policies and the relationship with the certification body or supervisor remain with you and your advisers.

Our supervisor wants every release approved and evidenced. Across a three-month modernisation, when does the first auditable release appear?

The opening fortnight is reconnaissance: which systems exist, who genuinely understands them, and what stands between a merge and a release. By around week six the aim is that one service builds, deploys and rolls back without anyone touching a server. The remainder of the quarter repeats that on the next two candidates and moves the surrounding infrastructure into code.

How do you handle access to our production systems?

Named accounts in your identity provider, least privilege, hardware-backed multi-factor and no shared logins. Read-only comes first, and write access arrives only where a task requires it. Secrets stay in your vault or cloud secret manager, never in a chat message or a ticket. Every action is attributable, and access is revoked the day the work stops.

Does Swiss customer data have to stay in Switzerland?

Usually not by law, but often by contract or supervisory expectation, which is why the answer starts with your policy rather than our architecture. Zurich carries AWS eu-central-2, Google europe-west6 and Azure Switzerland North, so keeping production inside the country is straightforward. Where a second region is permitted, Milan is 214 km away and adds real resilience.
