DevOps in Abu Dhabi — the detail
How We Work with Engineering Teams in Abu Dhabi
The capital runs the country's oldest and largest software estates. Energy operations, sovereign investment vehicles, federal ministries, a defence and aerospace group, the ADGM financial free zone and a national airline all keep systems that predate the cloud by a decade or more and cannot simply be switched off for a rewrite. Alongside them sits a newer layer - Hub71 startups, Masdar, the applied-AI and research ventures - that expects to deploy several times a day. Most Abu Dhabi engineering leaders are asked to run both at once.
Modernisation here is rarely a migration; it is a long series of careful extractions. We do that work remotely, led by Md Nahid (CKA, CKS, AWS Solutions Architect), starting from whatever exists rather than from a reference architecture. Distance is not the constraint people assume: AWS me-central-1 and Azure UAE North are 121 km up the coast and still under 10 ms, Doha is roughly 304 km away, and AWS in Bahrain, 426 km out, answers in roughly 10 to 20 ms - so a two-region design is genuinely available when a regulator or a board asks for one.
Regions, Latency and Residency for Abu Dhabi
| Provider | Region | Location | Distance | Est. round trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWS | me-central-1 | UAE | 121 km | under 10 ms |
| Azure | UAE North | Dubai, UAE | 121 km | under 10 ms |
| Google Cloud | me-central1 | Doha, Qatar | 304 km | roughly 10-20 ms |
| Azure | Qatar Central | Doha, Qatar | 304 km | roughly 10-20 ms |
| AWS | me-south-1 | Bahrain | 426 km | roughly 10-20 ms |
The closest region to Abu Dhabi is AWS me-central-1 in UAE, about 121 km away — a round trip of under 10 ms before application time. We pin latency-sensitive services there and spread availability zones for resilience.
Distances are great-circle from the area centre; round-trip figures are conservative estimates from that distance, not measured SLAs.
The Abu Dhabi Markets We Serve
Abu Dhabi is one of 2 metros we cover in the UAE. Work is remote-first, so the distance between your desk and ours never sits on the critical path of a release.
Sectors Driving DevOps Demand in Abu Dhabi
Oil, gas and petrochemicals shape everything else: production reporting, trading systems and the industrial data platforms feeding them are the largest modernisation programmes in the emirate. Utilities and water carry the same profile, with control-adjacent systems that will never move wholesale to public cloud. Sovereign investment and asset management run analytics estates where lineage matters more than latency. Financial services inside ADGM operate under their own regulatory and data regime. Defence, aerospace and space technology hold long procurement cycles and strict handling requirements. Government health and social services keep records that must remain in the country by law. And the applied-AI and research ventures growing around Masdar City want none of the above, only speed.
What Sets Us Apart for Abu Dhabi Teams
Nobody in the capital gets to stop the business for eighteen months. The work has to be incremental, reversible, and legible to people who will still be here when the consultants are not.
- Application containerization as the first step, taking a monolith into containers with its behaviour unchanged before anything is rearchitected.
- The estate written down. Existing servers and networks brought under Terraform and Ansible, so the environment can be rebuilt rather than remembered by one long-serving administrator.
- Hybrid for as long as it takes. Plenty of workloads here will stay on-premises for years; pipelines and monitoring should span both instead of pretending one side does not exist.
- Three regions close at hand. me-central-1 and Azure UAE North at 121 km answer inside 10 ms, and AWS Bahrain, 426 km out at roughly 10 to 20 ms, gives the capital an unusually easy resilience story.
- Knowledge that stays behind. Every runbook, diagram and module lands in your repositories as it is written, because the people who inherit this estate will be your staff, not ours.
Frequently Asked Questions — Abu Dhabi
Our systems fall under national information assurance requirements. How far can you help?
We implement and evidence the technical controls: identity and access management, encryption, network segmentation, hardened baselines, centralised logging and change records that the pipeline generates on its own. That covers a large share of any assurance checklist. Interpretation of the standard, the formal assessment and the relationship with the authority remain yours, because they should.
How do you protect a production estate you are refactoring?
By changing as little as possible at once. Refactoring runs behind feature flags and in parallel environments, with a tested rollback for every step. Access is scoped and time-limited, credentials are short-lived, and no production data leaves your accounts. Where an old system cannot be patched, we isolate it at the network layer rather than pretend it is safe.
We are standardised on Jenkins and VMware. Will you push us to replace them?
No. Jenkins that has grown untidy is usually worth fixing rather than replacing, and a VMware estate can be automated and monitored properly without a migration project attached. If a change genuinely pays for itself we will show the arithmetic, but replacing working tooling is the most common way a modernisation programme loses its first year.
Can everything stay inside the country?
For most of it, yes. AWS me-central-1 and Azure UAE North are in-country regions 121 km from the capital, so production data, backups and logs can all be kept locally. Some categories, health records among them, are required by law to stay here. We design to that first and treat any cross-border service as a decision you sign off explicitly.
What does the first year of a modernisation programme actually look like?
An inventory nobody has, then the boring wins. Build and deploy automated for one representative application, its configuration captured in code, monitoring that shows real behaviour, and a rollback that has been rehearsed. Only then does anything move. Teams that reverse this order tend to discover halfway through a migration that they never understood the original system.
