DevOps in Scotland — the detail

How We Work with Engineering Teams in Scotland

Scotland holds four distinct technology clusters, not one, spread the length of the mainland. Glasgow, the largest at 626,000, mixes public-sector delivery, satellite manufacturing and bank operations. Edinburgh runs asset management, pensions and insurance, plus the fintech built on top of them. Aberdeen is turning five decades of offshore data into what is now largely a software problem. Dundee exports video games and drug-discovery research from two universities. Beyond all four sit firms in the Highlands, the Borders and the islands, hours from their nearest peer.

Hiring against that geography is the hard part. Edinburgh's fund houses and remote employers paying in dollars fish in the same shallow pool you do, and an Inverness salary rarely wins the offer. We work remotely by design, with Md Nahid (CKA, CKS, AWS Solutions Architect) leading delivery, so nothing waits on somebody driving up the M74. The infrastructure follows the same logic: Scotland sits nearer Dublin than London, with AWS eu-west-1 and Azure North Europe 359 km out and the London regions 564 km away, both answering in roughly 10 to 20 ms. Choosing between them is a residency decision, not a speed one.

The closest region to Scotland is AWS eu-west-1 in Dublin, Ireland, about 359 km away — a round trip of roughly 10-20 ms before application time. We pin latency-sensitive services there and spread availability zones for resilience.

Distances are great-circle from the area centre; round-trip figures are conservative estimates from that distance, not measured SLAs.

Scotland Industries That Depend on Reliable Delivery

Energy dominates the north east. Aberdeen's operators, subsea engineers and service companies are moving decades of production data into cloud analytics while standing up offshore wind and hydrogen ventures alongside it. Financial services anchor Edinburgh: asset managers, pension providers and insurers whose platforms answer to the FCA and whose release records get inspected. Dundee carries two specialities at once, video games and life-sciences research computing, and both punish an unpredictable build farm. The public sector is a substantial customer in its own right, from NHS boards to council services and the agencies around the Scottish Government. Food, drink and whisky supply chains have quietly become data businesses, tracking casks, provenance and export paperwork. Universities the length of the country run research compute that deserves the same discipline as production.

Why Scotland Teams Choose DevOps Services Pro

In a country this shape, working apart is already the norm rather than a concession. What we add is certified senior engineering a spread-out team can rarely justify employing full time.

  • One set of gates for the whole country. GitLab CI/CD implementation so a change raised in Aberdeen and one raised in Galashiels pass identical checks, with the evidence attached to each.
  • Region chosen deliberately. Dublin at 359 km and the London regions at 564 km both answer in roughly 10 to 20 ms, so your residency rules decide it rather than the map.
  • Europe/London, five hours ahead of US Eastern. Morning stand-ups sit in your day, and the afternoon still catches American customers and investors at their desks.
  • Written by default. Decisions, runbooks and handovers live in the repository, which is what lets a team split between Perth, Elgin and a kitchen in Fife function at all.
  • Two unforgiving risk cultures. Offshore operators and regulated fund platforms both want proof rather than assurances, so controls and logging get built to be shown.

Scotland DevOps FAQs

Our operations data comes off offshore assets. How do you keep it separated from everything else?

By making the boundary explicit. Operational data lands in its own accounts and networks, with no route from a developer laptop into that segment, and access is granted per task through your identity provider. Logging is centralised, so an unusual query is visible the same day. No copy of that data ever reaches our machines.

Engineers here are spread between Inverness, Stirling and Edinburgh. Does that complicate scheduling?

Less than you would expect, because everything runs on one shared clock. Europe/London, currently UTC+1, governs stand-ups, deploys and reviews, and synchronous time stays short and deliberate with the detail written down for whoever missed it. If an incident needs somebody at seven in the morning, that gets scheduled rather than improvised.

Dublin is closer to us than London. Does that mean we should host there?

Only where your data rules permit it. Dublin is 359 km away against 564 km to London, but both answer faster than a user can perceive, in the same roughly 10 to 20 ms band. Public-sector contracts and several financial mandates require UK residency, and that clause settles the region long before the map does.

Data from the northern sites is growing faster than the platform behind it. What is the actual order of work?

Read-only access comes first, then a written picture of the estate: how code reaches production, what the cloud bill is buying, and where the single points of failure and knowledge sit. Hands-on changes follow once that picture is agreed, starting with whatever is costing you evenings. The sequence is set with you, not fixed to a calendar.

The Terraform repo has drifted and nobody trusts it any more. Where do you begin?

With the Terraform, because untrusted state blocks everything downstream. We reconcile what the code claims against what is genuinely running, import the drift, and get a plan that comes back clean. Only then do we touch the build system, since moving pipelines onto infrastructure you cannot reproduce simply relocates the problem.
