DevOps in France — the detail
Platform Engineering Built for France Teams
France funds a lot of software companies and staffs very few of them with platform engineers. The pattern repeats from Station F in Paris to the scale-ups around Lyon, Toulouse and Montpellier: eight to forty engineers, a product customers pay for, and a deployment process that lives in one senior developer's head. It holds until the first enterprise buyer sends a security questionnaire, or a board member asks why shipping still requires a Thursday evening.
Geography makes the engineering answer unusually clean here. AWS eu-west-3, Google Cloud europe-west9 and Azure France Central all sit in Paris, roughly 191 km from the centre of the country and under 10 ms from it, with Google europe-west1 in Belgium at 372 km and AWS eu-central-2 in Zurich at 427 km as second regions in the 10-20 ms band. Sovereign hosts such as OVHcloud and Scaleway sit alongside them when a public buyer insists. We work remotely across all 12 regions and 51 metros listed on this site, led by Md Nahid (CKA, CKS, AWS Solutions Architect), so a team in Rennes gets the same engineers as one in Nice.
Cloud Regions Serving France
| Provider | Region | Location | Distance | Est. round trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWS | eu-west-3 | Paris, France | 191 km | under 10 ms |
| Google Cloud | europe-west9 | Paris, France | 191 km | under 10 ms |
| Azure | France Central | Paris, France | 191 km | under 10 ms |
| Google Cloud | europe-west1 | Belgium | 372 km | roughly 10-20 ms |
| AWS | eu-central-2 | Zurich, Switzerland | 427 km | roughly 10-20 ms |
The closest region to France is AWS eu-west-3 in Paris, France, about 191 km away — a round trip of under 10 ms before application time. We pin latency-sensitive services there and spread availability zones for resilience.
Distances are great-circle from the area centre; round-trip figures are conservative estimates from that distance, not measured SLAs.
Coverage Across France
Our France coverage follows where engineering actually happens — Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and 47 more metros. Every engagement is remote-first, so a team's postcode never decides how fast it ships.
The France Sectors We Know Best
French demand concentrates in six sectors. Fintech and insurtech cluster in Paris, where PSD2 and DORA turn deployment discipline into a supervisory conversation. Aerospace and defence run out of Toulouse and Bordeaux, with long-lived systems and suppliers who inherit security requirements from their prime contractors. Health and biotech concentrate around Lyon, where clinical data forces a residency decision early. Video games employ thousands in Montpellier, Bordeaux and Lyon, and live-service titles need autoscaling that survives a launch weekend. Deeptech and semiconductors sit in Grenoble, where simulation workloads dwarf the web tier. Luxury and retail e-commerce, headquartered in Paris but selling worldwide, live or die on peak season capacity.
What Sets Us Apart for France Teams
The alternative is a recruitment process. A senior DevOps hire in France means a search, a package benchmarked against Paris, employer contributions on top of the gross figure, and a notice period that can push the start date a quarter out.
- Pipeline first, platform later. A GitLab CI/CD implementation comes first for a reason: merge to production without a gatekeeper, then argue about Kubernetes.
- Three hyperscalers, one metro. Paris carries AWS, Google Cloud and Azure regions at once, so multi-cloud here is a procurement option rather than a slide.
- No handover gap. Standups, reviews and incident calls sit inside your hours on Europe/Paris time, UTC+1 and UTC+2 in summer, while your afternoon still reaches the US East Coast six hours behind.
- Diligence evidence as a by-product. Branch protection, signed releases and an auditable deploy history are what a data room asks for, and the pipeline produces them anyway.
- Bought as scope, not as payroll. You keep the repositories, the Terraform and the runbooks, so the platform stays yours and keeps running whether or not we are still involved.

France DevOps FAQs
Can you keep all of our data inside France?
Yes. AWS eu-west-3, Google Cloud europe-west9 and Azure France Central are all Paris regions, so a French-only footprint costs you nothing in managed services. We pin the region in Terraform, block resource creation elsewhere with policy, and keep logs, backups and secrets inside the same boundary. Where a tender demands a French sovereign host, the same containers can run on a provider such as OVHcloud or Scaleway.
How do you move us off one rented server without a freeze?
One service at a time. We describe what you already run in Terraform, stand the same shape up in a Paris region, then move traffic behind DNS while the old machine stays warm enough to fall back to. Databases go last, with a replica and a rehearsed switch. Your product roadmap keeps moving throughout, which is the whole point of doing it incrementally.
Peak season and a live-service launch both land this year. What does an engagement produce before they arrive?
A typical plan runs in three blocks, agreed with you before anything starts. Weeks one and two are read-only: access, an inventory of what runs where, and a written list of what breaks first. Weeks three to six deliver the pipeline and the infrastructure code. Weeks seven to twelve add observability, on-call routing and a rehearsed restore. Each block ends with a demo.
We are six engineers, is a DevOps engagement overkill?
Six is precisely the size where it pays. You are too small to lose a developer to infrastructure full time and too big to keep releasing by hand. The build stays deliberately modest: managed containers or a small Kubernetes footprint, one pipeline, one dashboard, and documentation a product developer can follow without ringing anyone.
We are weighing eu-west-3 against OVHcloud and Scaleway with nobody in-house to own the decision. Does the hire come before the architecture?
Eventually, yes, but the order matters. Hire first and your new engineer inherits an undocumented estate and spends two quarters excavating it. Build the platform first, write the runbooks, then hand it over, and the person you recruit joins something legible. That also turns a unicorn search into an ordinary mid-level hire you can actually close.
How soon can work start once we agree scope?
Sooner than a hire, because there is no visa, no relocation and no notice period standing in the way. Timing depends on current commitments and on how quickly access is granted, so a start date is confirmed in writing before you commit. The first session is a working one: repository access, read permissions on the cloud accounts, and a walkthrough of the deployment as it exists today.
